What is a "Trademark, Copyright & Patent Registration"

These are three different types of Intellectual Property (IP) protection, that legally safeguard different aspects of a business's creations:

Trademark

  • Protects brand identifiers; business name, logo, tagline, slogan, product name, or symbol.
  • Prevents others from using a similar name/logo that could confuse customers.
  • Renewable indefinitely (typically every 10 years) as long as it's in use.

Copyright

  • Protects original creative and literary works; content, software code, designs, artwork, music, written material, website content, etc.
  • Automatically exists once the work is created, but registration provides stronger legal proof and enforcement rights.
  • Typically lasts for the creator's lifetime plus several decades (varies by country).

Patent

  • Protects inventions; new products, processes, or technologies that are novel, useful, and non-obvious.
  • Gives the owner exclusive rights to make, use, or sell the invention for a limited period (typically 20 years).
  • Requires a detailed technical application and examination process.

Together, these registrations protect a business's brand, creative output, and innovations from being copied, stolen, or misused by competitors.

Business Risk if Trademark, Copyright & Patent Registration is not done from INFSPL's Experts

  • Weak or rejected applications

IP filings involve technical legal language and strict classification systems (e.g., trademark classes); errors often lead to rejection or delays.

  • Incomplete protection

A poorly filed trademark or patent may leave loopholes that competitors can exploit.

  • Higher risk of infringement disputes

Without proper registration, you have little legal standing if someone copies your brand, content, or invention.

  • Costly rework

Mistakes in filing (wrong class, incomplete claims, weak wording) often mean refilling, wasting time and money.

  • Vulnerable to squatting

Others (including bad-faith actors) may register your brand name or similar trademarks first if you delay or file incorrectly.

  • Weak enforcement power

If your registration is poorly drafted, defending it in court against infringers becomes much harder.

  • Reduced business valuation

IP assets are often factored into overall business/brand valuation; poor or missing protection can lower your company's worth.

  • International complications

IP laws vary by country; you may miss opportunities (or make mistakes) when expanding globally.
